We organized the world’s first virtual GOARN Tier 1.5 workshop(IPC/Case management)

更新日:2021年11月26日

We organized the world’s first virtual GOARN Tier 1.5 workshop specializing in IPC and case management for the Western Pacific Region!

Together with the Global Outbreak Alert Response Network (GOARN), and WHO Regional Office for Western Pacific (WPRO), we organized the virtual GOARN Tier 1.5 workshop on November 17 and 18, 2021, as a part of activities for the Research Project on Preparation for Occurrence of Category I Infectious Disease Patients, supported by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan (MHLW). The purpose of the training is to provide an orientation to the international outbreak response with GOARN for IPC and case management specialists in the Western Pacific Region. The workshop targeted specifically to Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) and Case Management Specialists. Over 30 participants joined the training from more than 20 countries in seven countries including Australia, Singapore, Fiji and Japan.

The workshop started with opening remarks from the MHLW, National Center for Global Health and Medicine, and WPRO:

  1. Dr. Jun Sugihara, Principal Deputy Director at Infectious Disease Control Division, Health Service Bureau, MHLW, welcomed participants and emphasized the importance of capacity development in IPC and case management for the imminent public health emergency.
  2. Dr. Norio Ohmagari, Director of DCC, NCGM, spoke about the history of training development with GOARN.
  3. Dr. Babatunde Olowokure, Director, Division of Health Security, Regional Emergency Director, WPRO, explained the history of the establishment of GOARN, a vital role of GOARN in the COVID-19, and then encouraged participants for the deployment in the future.

Although this year’s training took place online due to the COVID-19 pandemic like last year, we made the most of this opportunity to expand the diversity in participants.

The workshop included a group discussion of case studies based on realistic scenarios of GOARN missions in the field and sessions by facilitators from WHO, Australia, and Japan with experience in GOARN deployment. The workshop contents were very fulfilling.

We received excellent support and cooperation from many personnel and institutions such as GOARN, WHO Headquarters, WHO WPRO, and MHLW. It was a great success by having 31 enthusiastic trainees who actively participated and learned throughout the course. We hope that trainees will be deployed via GOARN at the front line of the international outbreak response soon. Our research group will continue to make multifaceted efforts to work for human resource development and promote the rapid deployment of experts to contribute to GOARN’s missions.
